About David W Schafer

David W Schafer David was born and raised in Northwestern Missouri on a diversified livestock and crop farm. He developed a love of agriculture and livestock at an early age. He enjoyed school so upon completing high school he obtained his B.S. Degree in Animal Science from Northwest Missouri State University then entered graduate school at Colorado State University where he completed his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Animal Breeding and Genetics. He also completed a post-doctorate at Colorado State University’s San Juan Basin Research Center (SJBRC), Hesperus, CO.

Upon completing his post-doctorate in 1993, David was hired by Colorado State University to manage the SJBRC and the Four Corners Bull Test. In 1999, he moved to his current position with the University of Arizona as Resident Director/Associate Research Scientist of the V Bar V Ranch Agricultural Experiment Station in Rimrock, AZ. David considers himself truly blessed to have been given these opportunities which have allowed him to combine his passion for agriculture, education, and photography. He carries his camera with him all the time on the ranch in an attempt to capture everyday ranch life and other special and unique moments.

David was given a small Kodak Insta-Matic camera when he was younger and enjoyed taking photos but it was not until he entered graduate school that he was able to upgrade his camera and began to explore the world of photography. David enjoys photographing nature and livestock in particular. Over time, he discovered that he had a knack for photographing livestock and in 2008, was approached by friends at the Danciger Tybar Angus Ranch in Carbondale, CO to photograph cattle for their annual fall sale. David has not had any formal photography training. He has taught himself through trial and error, mostly error. Recently, he has enrolled in some workshops offered through the Arizona Professional Photographers Association and feels that these classes have taken his photography to a whole new level.

When not working, David enjoys traveling and seeing the world. His travels have taken him to all the western and mid-western States as well as most of the Southern & Eastern U.S. States and thirteen foreign countries on six different continents. Highlights of his travels include an African photo safari, cruises down both the Amazon and Nile Rivers and black water rafting in New Zealand. On these trips, his love for agriculture becomes even more apparent as he always comes home with numerous pictures of cows and other livestock. He notes that on both the cruises he took that his enjoyment for photographing cows was so apparent that people he just met were coming up to him and pointing out cows grazing along the banks of the rivers.

David’s photos have been featured on covers of several Arizona Cattlelog magazines, numerous ads, calendars, and on the covers of several agricultural reports. He has also received “Best of Show” awards in the professional divisions for photos entered in the Yavapai County and Verde Valley Fairs. However, his greatest reward is just seeing someone’s face light up when they look and one of his photos.
